Throughout his distinguished 20-year career as the head of various not-for-profit organizations, Mr. Cancel has maintained an active consulting practice that was only interrupted during his tenure as Commissioner of Cultural Affairs (government conflict of interests rules prevented him from having any private clients.)

After leaving public office in 1994, however, he has undertaken numerous consulting projects for a diverse range of clients, including the following:

2005 Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone (UMEZ), New York, NY. Hired by this quasi-public agency to provide technical assistance and assess the organizational capacity of the Taller Boricua.

1998 - 2001 The Rockefeller Foundation, New York, NY. Hired by the Foundation to provide strategic planning and fund raising counsel to the US / Mexico Fund for Culture and the Network of Latin American Theater Presenters.

1987 - Also for the Foundation, Mr. Cancel was a member of the National Task Force examining the role of museums in the presentation of non-Western cultures.

1999 - 2000 Museum of the Americas Foundation, Washington, DC. Supervised and curated all exhibitions and Information Technology projects.

1996 - 1997 The Inter-American Development Bank, Washington, DC. Researched and wrote the case statement for the proposed Museum of the Americas.

1994 - 1996 The Old State House, Hartford, CT. Curated the Legacy / Legado exhibition of 16 contemporary Latin American artists.

1991 The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, New York, NY. Review of long-term funding priorities.

1991 Awards in the Visual Arts, Winston-Salem, NC. Jury member to award ten artist fellowships

1991 - 2001 Fundación Cultural Quipus, La Paz, Bolivia Developed the governance structure for a new cultural center in the capital city. Review operational and architectural plans.

1990 The Adolph & Ester Gottlieb Foundation, New York, NY. Selected grant recipients

1989 - 1990 National Endowment for the Humanities, Washington, DC. Review Proposals. 1988 - 1990 Regional Plan Association / Bronx Development Council. Member of the Council and Vice Chairman of the Cultural and Environmental Quality Task Force.

1988 Fundación Eugenio Mendoza, Caracas, Venezuela Juror to select the national painting award recipient.

1988 American Association of Museums/ICOM, Washington, DC. Task Force member reviewing international role of American museums.

1987 Fine Arts Museum of Long Island, NY. Curated an exhibition on computer generated art. 1985 - 1988 New York National Bank, NY. Established the corporate art collection.

1976 The Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, N. Y. Exhibition organizer for "Ñam, Ñam", an exhibition on contemporary Hispanic artists.

1975 - 1976 New Jersey Public Television, Trenton, N. J. Assisted with the production of "Imagines" a bilingual television program on the Hispanic community of New Jersey.
